Pre-planning your Koi pond is perhaps the most important step in the Koi pond process. There are many factors involved in building a Koi pond, and not being properly planned can result in a disaster.
Pond Designs
Make sure that you have a pond design that you like, and that meets all zoning requirements. You don’t want to end up with a design that ends up breaking a city code, or you run into an underground pipe.
Know Your Budget
More often than not, people will start to build a Koi pond, and then quickly exceed their budget. Be sure to lay out all specs of the Koi pond, including everything from all building costs, zoning costs, Koi fish costs, all electronic costs including pumps, lights, filters, etc., all costs for water treatment, all costs for plants and landscaping, and any other costs that need to be factored in. Many times people will factor in just the building cost, and none of the supplies that go along with the actual pond itself.
It is always safe to have a bit of breathing room, as you never know what variables you may have to encounter.
Build your Ecosystem
The best way to approach building a Koi pond, is to understand that you are building a working ecosystem. To achieve a working ecosystem, you will need the following elements:
Purification System
A purification system not only cleans out large debris, but also filters out excess algae and nutrients, which can cause your water to appear dirty, by giving a murky, green hue to the water.
Pumps
Pumps are essential to re-circulate the water, and add oxygen to the water for the fish and plants. A great, natural approach is to add a waterfall to your pond. Having a waterfall easily adds oxygen to your water, and also releases harmful gasses such as nitrates.
Pond Liner/ Sealer
Having some sort of liner is extremely important. Without a liner or sealant you can expose your pond to not only leaking water, but more importantly having dangerous chemicals leaking into your water. Many chemicals that lie outside of your pond can seep in, causing a potential change in pH, which can lead to Koi fish disease and possibly death. It is extremely important to have a proper liner in your pond.
Plants
Having plants in your pond offers oxygen for the fish, and also help by keeping nutrients down, as the plants also consume the nutrients. Plants also keep the pH levels down, but consuming nitrates in the water, which are harmful to the fish.
Algae
Algae is extremely important to a pond, as it consumes harmful nitrates, and nutrients that cause the water to appear dirty. Although too much algae can cause the pond to appear dirty, the correct amount will keep your pond water clear.
Fish
Having fish in your pond is essential, as fish’s byproducts are consumed by plants, which in turn offer oxygen to the fish.
*Be sure to wait for your pond to stabalize before adding your fish. If you add fish immediately after building your pond, you will more than likely kill your fish. The pond needs to mature before introducing fish into it.
