Waterfalls

There are several different ways to add a Picture_380waterfall to your Koi Pond.  The first and easiest option is to purchase and install a waterfall kit.  This is obviously the easiest, as the kits include all necessary equipment, with instructions on how to install and operate.

Several things to look for in a quality waterfall kit include a pump, preferably one that is energy efficient and has a warranty.  Depending on the amount of usage, you want to make sure that your pump wont burn out.

You can find waterfall kits at most local pool or home garden supply stores.  Be sure to research your options beforehand, as there are most likely more options than just what your local supply store carries.

The other option is to build a waterfall yourself.  In order to do so, you will need the following materials:

  • Rocks
  • Mortar
  • PVC piping
  • A submersible water pump
  • Pond Liner

You will first want to play out what you want your waterfall to look like.  It is best to sketch out a design, with specific dimensions.  Once you have completed the outline, you will want to remove any weeds and debris from your desired location.  You want to use the same procedure as you did when creating your Koi Pond, by outlining your desired design, and leveling the ground.

Next, you will want to lay steel rebar, just as you would during the construction of your Koi Pond, and fill with shotcrete.  Before filling, you want to make sure that your PVC pipe is laid in place, and connected to the pump and pond.

Once the concrete is poured and dries, you can then focus on your rock layout.  Larger rocks on the outside make it easier to route the water flow.  Once you have made sure that your rocks will create your desired design, you will use mortar to set your rocks in place.  If you do not plan to use mortar, you will want to install a liner under your rocks.  This is to prevent any water from leaking into the ground, causing pipes and/ or your pond to rot.

Before you start be sure to contact your local utility company to ensure that you won’t be damaging any lines when digging.

Statues and Fountains

Statues and fountains are great additions to a Koi Pond.  There are many types of statues and fountains, with many different ways to install them.  If you are planning on having an island-type statue or fountain, it is a good idea to plan this in before building your pond.  The ideal solution is to use a concrete form such as Sonotube to create a pillar that will sit approx. 6 inches below the water’s surface.  If you are planning on having a fountain, then you will want to run your PVC through the center of your pillar.

Once the concrete has dried, you can install your statue or fountain.  If you are installing a fountain, you will want to cut your PVC pipe down to the appropriate size.
